A fundamental issue normally addressed in assessing the capability for research development within practice professions is the availability of funding for both individuals and institutions. However, the issues discussed in this paper also require systematic attention if we are to realize the benefits that can come from the combination of a professional practice perspective and research cornpetence that social work practitioner- -researchers can contribute to research issues in mental health.
